Application Guidelines Optimize Your Varnish Formulation

Follow these proven procedures to achieve optimal performance and consistent results in your varnish applications.

Dosage & Usage Recommendations

Typical Addition Levels

Standard Varnish 0.5 - 2.0%
High-Build Varnish 1.0 - 3.0%
Marine Varnish 1.5 - 2.5%
Wood Floor Varnish 0.8 - 2.2%

Key Benefits in Varnish

  • Prevents sagging on vertical surfaces
  • Improves brushability and leveling
  • Enhances storage stability
  • Reduces settling of fillers and pigments

Dispersion Procedure

1

Pre-Dispersion

Add organoclay to the resin or solvent portion while stirring at moderate speed. Avoid adding directly to pigment paste.

2

High Shear Mixing

Apply high shear mixing for 5-10 minutes to ensure complete activation and dispersion of the organoclay.

3

Polar Activator

Add polar activator (methanol or ethanol) at 30-40% of organoclay weight for enhanced performance in some formulations.

4

Final Mixing

Add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Allow adequate aging time for full rheological development (2-24 hours).

Important Notes

  • • Temperature control: Keep below 60°C during dispersion
  • • Avoid over-shearing which may reduce thixotropic properties
  • • Test compatibility with other additives before full-scale production
