Our premium organoclay products deliver outstanding rheology control and thixotropic performance in petroleum solvent-based waterproofing systems -- ensuring superior anti-sag, water resistance, and long-term durability.

Organoclay waterproofing application with petroleum solvent base

Why Organoclay in Waterproofing?

In petroleum solvent-based waterproofing coatings and membranes, organoclay acts as a powerful rheology modifier and thixotropic agent. It prevents sagging on vertical surfaces, controls viscosity under shear, and enhances the suspension of pigments and fillers for a uniform, high-performance film.

  • Excellent anti-sagging on vertical and overhead surfaces
  • Stable viscosity control across temperature ranges
  • Superior suspension of pigments and fillers
  • Compatible with petroleum solvent-based systems
  • Enhanced water and moisture barrier performance

Recommended Products

Our engineers recommend the following organoclay grades specifically optimized for petroleum solvent-based waterproofing formulations.

Organoclay

CP-34

High-performance organoclay with excellent gelling efficiency in petroleum solvent systems. Ideal for heavy-duty waterproofing membranes requiring strong thixotropy and anti-sag control.

  • Strong thixotropic gel structure
  • High compatibility with aliphatic solvents
  • Excellent anti-settling performance
Petroleum Solvent Based
Organoclay

CP-26

Versatile organoclay grade offering balanced viscosity and gel strength. Well-suited for general-purpose waterproofing coatings and sealants in petroleum solvent bases.

  • Balanced rheology and gel strength
  • Smooth application and leveling
  • Suitable for brush, roller, spray
Petroleum Solvent Based
Organoclay

CP-RL

Self-activating organoclay with reduced need for polar activators. Designed for ease of dispersion in low-polarity petroleum solvents, delivering reliable waterproofing performance.

  • Easy dispersion, self-activating grade
  • Low-polarity solvent compatibility
  • Consistent batch-to-batch performance

Technical Guidance

Engineer's Step-by-Step Usage Guide

Follow these recommended steps from our application engineers to achieve optimal dispersion and performance of organoclay in petroleum solvent-based waterproofing systems.

  1. 1

High-Speed Dispersion of Organoclay in Petroleum Solvent

Add the organoclay (CP-34, CP-26, or CP-RL) to the petroleum solvent oil. Stir at high speed to achieve initial dispersion and begin building the gel network.

    Cutting speed: 8-12 m/s
Use sanding machine for best results
  2. 2

Add Polar Activator (Methanol or Ethanol)

Introduce 45-60% methanol as a polar activator while continuing high-speed stirring. The activator promotes full intercalation and maximizes gel strength. If methanol is restricted or unavailable, ethanol is a suitable alternative.

    Primary Activator

    Methanol -- 45-60%

    Recommended for optimal activation

    Alternative Activator

    Ethanol

Use when methanol is not permitted

  3. 3

Add Pigment and Resin -- Grind or High-Speed Stir

Introduce pigment and resin into the mixture. Grind using a sanding machine or stir at high speed to ensure homogeneous dispersion throughout the waterproofing formulation.

    Important: Solid Resin Handling

If the resin is in solid form, heat it to a liquid state before adding to the mixture. This ensures uniform blending and prevents uneven dispersion or clumping.
